Wednesday, 8 May 2013 - Garingal is hosting State League 5 on Sunday, 19 May 2013 at Cullen Bullen near Lithgow. The event is the second of a "double header" state league weekend near Lithgow. The Sunday event is being held on the "Baal Bone Junction" map. We are assembling in a new area of the map so most of the courses are expected to be in areas where we have not run much before. There will be plenty of rocks and pagodas on the course including some of the higher areas. There are spectacular views. Experienced Garingal orienteer Graeme Dawson is setting the course. WE have 144 entries already - check out who is coming. Entries close this Friday so why don't you REGISTER NOW? You can also register for the Saturday event which will be held on fast terrain at Falnash State Forest.
ACT Championships - a solid representation of Garingal members travelled to the Australian Capital Territory last weekend for the ACT Championships. There were some great results for the Garingal Club. Highlights in the results included first placing in the Middle Distance for James Lithgow, Tony Wilson, Ron Junghans, Ross Barr and Barbara Hill.
Junior Coaching - there is a special coaching session for juniors being held on Sunday, 12 May 2013 at South Turramurra at corner of Kissing Point Road and Vernon Street. The time is 9:30am to 11:30am with a cost of $10. Mums new to orienteering are welcome to attend and participate without charge. Interested persons should email Barbara Hill at

Sunday, 28 April 2013 - Hilltop - The third state league event was held at Hilltop last weekend. The area is renowned for complex sandstone rock formations set amongst very healthy undergrowth. It lived up to expectations with the area really testing orienteers' navigational skills and resolve. The cautious and patient orienteers were rewarded with good times as it was difficult to get up a head of steam and keep contact with the map.
The courses set by Eric Morris were excellent, particularly in the longer courses which used a "single relay" concept with a mass start and runners completing 4 separate split loops using the start area as a base.
Garingal fielded a broad selection of club members. There were standout results from members transitioning to the bush maps including impressive times from Hugh Gingell, fresh from the junior training camp, Rochelle Cox and Ted Woodley. Check out some photos (check out the vegetation) and the results from the event. Club results can be found here.
State League at Cullen Bullen - the next state league is a "double header" in the Lithgow area to be held on the weekend of 18/19 May 2013. The Sunday event is being organised by Garingal and is the major bush event for the club for the year. It is being held on the "Baal Bone Junction" map near Cullen Bullen. This is an area of large rock pagodas set in a spectacularly scenic area. All club members are encouraged to attend and join in on the action. You can enter the event here. The Saturday afternoon event is at Falnash State Forest and you can enter this event here. Electronic entries close on 10 May 2013.

MetrOLeague - the second MetrOLeague was held on 21 April 2013 at Callan Park in stunning weather conditions adjacent to Sydney Harbour. Garingal fielded 8 teams and finished with what must be an association record of 7 losses! However, we were consoled with the knowledge that 2 of our teams were defeated using surplus runners from the Garingal club! Check out the full report.
Bendigo - Sunday, 1 April 2013 - Michele Dawson was selected in the Australian team to compete in the Junior World Orienteering Championships (JWOC) after performing well in the junior elite division of the Easter Carnival. Congratulations Michele and good luck in the Czech republic in July!

Summer Series Finale - the Minister for Sport, the Honourable Graham Annesley MP, attended the final summer series event last Wednesday to present the awards for the series. We were pleased that the Minister was able to present the Sydney Summer Series cup to Karin Hefftner for the overall cumulative points score. Well done Karin and thank you to Ross Barr for co-ordinating the series again.

Sunday 25 March 2013 - Mitchell Park - a great start to the MetrO year. The first round was a metro classic with around 150 runners turning up to sample the bush and rock challenge at Mitchell Park. Garingal fielded 8 teams and came away with 6 wins - a credit to new club captain Tania Kennedy. There were some notable performances amongst the pack. The north sydney boys (with a guest appearance from Jo) competed in metro as the Garingal "legless" team and finished with a win. The Monitors in Division A, with a blend of youth and "experience" chalked up a win against the new University team (which incidently starred Colin C as a welcome late recruit into Division A). Jim Merchant and Duncan Currie bagged 10 points in each of their match ups. Alex Kennedy, Toby Wilson, Jo Hill and Lloyd Gledhill also pocketed 9 points in their races. Check out the full results. Thanks very much to organisers John and Kathleen Anderson, course setter Glenn Horrocks and controller Carol Jacobson for a super event. Thank you also to the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Lithgow - Sunday 17 March 2013 - the first State League event was held last weekend near Lithgow. The event was held in beautiful Autumn sunshine among the stunning rock pagodas of Wolgan Valley. The courses had it all. There were giant rock faces, a very long and damp swamp, some open eucalypt areas and, of course, the obligatory steep hills to test endurance. Garingal turned out a good crowd for the event and there was a large contingent of club members enjoying the live music at the Lithgow Workies club on Saturday evening. Full results can be found here. Thank you to the Central Coast Club for organising the event.
