On the Right Track

Michele Dawson crosses the line at the Coalfields ClassicSunday, 13 May 2012 - Newcastle - Michele Dawson's preparations for representing Australia at the Junior World Orienteering Champs are well on track following an outstanding weekend at the "Coalfields Classic".  Last weekend was a national orienteering league event near Newcastle and Michele wrapped up the races with two second placings in the bush events.  Michele is the Garingal club's first ever Australian junior representative and will be heading to Slovakia in July to compete against the world's best orienteering juniors.  Congratulations Michele on your Australian team selection and the weekend results.

Coalfields Classic - quite a few Garingal members also headed up the F3 for the weekend.  They were rewarded with a quality sprint event set amongst the beautiful bush surroundings of Newcastle University and at Pelaw Main Colliery the most spectacular finish area in recent orienteering history.  The finish area was an historic parkland featuring an old railway station and coal skips from a long time ago.  The train line was closed for the day (hence the picture).  Spectators could sit on the station platform tracking the progress of the orienteers steaming into the finish chute.   The NSW Wildfires, which is the under 12 junior group, also were in full flight with their new blue shirts and snappy new modern tent and banner.  There were some spectacularly good Garingal results.  These included, but are not limited to, Ross Barr with a 1.1.2, James Lithgow with a 2.1.1 (a dead heat for first on day 2), Daniel Hill with a 1.1.1, Duncan Currie with a 1.1.1, Alex Kennedy with a 1.2.2 and new recruit Bruce Beder with a 1.2.3.  Full results from the weekend can be found here.  Photos can be found here.

Next Garingal Event -Garingal will be holding a club event this Sunday, 20 May 2012 at Artarmon.  The event will also double as the junior league so we are expecting a large turnout of families for the race.  The meeting area for the event is Artarmon Reserve at east end of Burra Road, Artarmon (see map ) with starts between 9:30am and 11:30am.  The organiser for the event is Colin Currie who can be contacted on 0419 980 962 if you require any specific information.

Cremorne by Moonlight

Sunday, 29 April 2012 - Cremorne - this week is a busy one for Garingal with a couple of important events.  First up was the Moonlight Madness orienteering held Wednesday, 2 May 2012 at Cremorne Point.  Carolyn Haupt set an excellent course as well as providing just about excellent weather.  Starts were from Cremorne Reserve on the western part of Cremorne Point about 200 metres from the ferry terminal.  Quite a few took the opportunity to come by ferry.  Controls were set over Cremorne Point and Kurraba Point.  Results and the map used can be viewed/downloaded from the 2012 Results page.

Second up is round 2 of the MetrOleague which is being held next Sunday, 6 May 2012 at the University of Western Sydney at Kingswood.  Garingal is hosting the event and we hope to also field a record 9 teams as well!  Some of our club members will be attending the ACT champs and there is also a major scout camp next weekend so we may be a little down on our usual surplus of competitors so please email Jamie Kennedy if you are interested in competing for Garingal at the event.

Coalfield Classic - the Newcastle club is hosting a national orienteering league round on the weekend of 12 and 13 May 2012.   Elite orienteers from around Australia, including Australian representatives, will be competing in the races.  There is a sprint at Newcastle University on the Saturday followed by a bush event on Sunday.  This is a great opportunity to match your urban sprint skills against the best orienteers in Australia.

Stanthorpe Rocks

The Kennedy family team in the Australian 3 Day relaySaturday, 14 April 2012 - Stanthorpe - the Kennedy family was the pick of the Garingal teams in the national family relays on the opening day of the Australian 3 Days.  The family relay was held in granite country near Stanthorpe in Queensland and was the start of the major national carnival over Easter.  The Kennedy's went on to compete with distinction in the rest of the carnival with Jamie mixing it with the "sledge" M21AS division and Tania finishing an excellent 4th in a very large field in the W45-54AS division.  Photos from the event can be found here.

The main part of the carnival was the 3 races held over the Saturday, Sunday and Monday of Easter.  The carnival is a national ranking event and is the primary selection race for the Australian teams to compete in Europe in July.  We are pleased to announce that Garingal junior, Michele Dawson, raced extremely well over the weekend and was selected in the team to represent Australia at the Junior World Orienteering Championships to be held in Slovakia in July.  Congratulations Michele! We will have to arrange a club social evening to watch Michele compete at the carnival live over the web!

The Garingal club finished 4th overall in the carnival and all of our team had a great time orienteering, visiting the nearby national parks, vineyards and cheese factories and also on the social front.  Garingal members filled age divisions in the carnival spanning under 10s to over 85s!  The juniors batted on after Easter for a week of training at the follow up events around Stanthorpe - including on the famous "Cascades" granite city map just outside Stanthorpe.

The terrain was tough and sometimes technical and a far cry from running the summer series around the streets of Sydney!  There were quite a few mispunches particularly on the second day when the courses were long and the weather very warm.  There were, however, a solid collection of results amongst the club including Neil Schafer (1st in M85A), Daniel Hill (1st in M16A), Airdrie Long (2nd in W21AS), Joanna Hill (2nd in W12A), Christa Schafer (3rd in W70A),  Tania Kennedy (4th in W45-54AS), Michele Dawson (5th in W17-20E),  Ross Barr (5th in M65A), Toby Wilson (5th in M16A), Tony Hill (5th in M45A), Bryony Cox (5th in W65A), Tom Kennedy (6th in M12A), Matthew Hill (6th in M17-20E), Tom Kennedy (6th in M12A), Alex Kennedy (7th in M14A), Jai Di Tommaso (7th in W Open B),  Graham Dawson (8th in M45A), Tim Cox (9th in M70A), James Lithgow (9th in M55A), Barbara Dawson (10th in W45-54AS),  Barbara Junghans (10th in W55AS), Jamie Kennedy (11th in Sledge - M21AS), Ron Junghans (13th in M65A) and Huon Wilson (14th in M17-20E).

This weekend there are some sprint events in Brisbane.  James Lithgow has finished first in M55A and Ross Barr first in M65A. Full results from the carnival can be found here. Photos

Spot the Orienteer

Duncan Currie wades through the long grass at Cecil HillsSunday, 1 April 2012 - Cecil Hills - the opening round of the MetrOleague was no joke with some exceptionally long grass greeting competitors at the Cecil Hills venue.  Height was an advantage to runners and the best routes were along the tracks even if it meant running a little further.  Garingal fielded a record 8 teams for MetrOleague with another couple of teams in reserve.   It was great to see 2 Garingal teams in first division.  Although we fielded a large number of teams, wins were few and far between but our losses were generally very close.  The Western and Hills Club had put on an excellent set of courses with some very challenging decisions to make between going "cross country" or sticking to the tracks.   Photos of the event can be found here.  Results to be posted soon.  The next MetrOleague is at Kingswood on 6 May 2012.  Please contact Jamie Kennedy to register your interested in competiting in the next MetrOleague as part of a Garingal team.

Photo Location Competition - thank you for the entrants in the competition to nominate the location and position on the map for the photo below.  Of course, the location is the horse paddock on the South Turramurra map in metropolitan Sydney!  Ross Duker was first with the correct area and Neil Hawthorne was first with the correct area and position on the map to get the bonus point.  Ross and Neil responded within 60 minutes of the article being posted on the website.  Duncan Currie gets a special mention for sending a very precise excerpt of map into the editor.

Australian 3 Days - a large swag of Garingal orienteers are heading to Stanthorpe in southern Queensland over Easter for the Australian 3 Days Carnival.  This is a 4 day carnival which will be held amongst the granite boulders which the area is famous for.  We will be posting news of the event as the carnival progresses.

Coalfields Classic- the Coalfields Classic is a weekend of orienteering just up the F3 near Newcastle on 12/13 May 2012.  It brings together top quality terrain with the very best in organisation and planning that NSW has to offer. These races are State League events and National Orienteering League Round 3. Nominated as one of the Australian team World Orienteering Championship selection races, and Sunday 13th Long Distance as a World Ranking Event it is no wonder there is such a classy field of competitors lining up to run. Have a look at the competition area maps and start to get excited. Entries are still open until 15th April 2012.
