2013 News

Australian Champs Wind Up

Sunday, 7 October 2013 - Bungendore - the 2013 Australian Championships have wrapped up with the final races being held in the shadow of the Lake George wind farms near Bungendore.

The annual Australian Schools Champs races were held mid-week over 2 days in bushland on a property east of Bungendore.  Tuesday was the individual race and the relays, which are everyone's favourite event, were held on the Wednesday.  There were very strong winds for the individual race and it was tough going for the competitors.  Aidan Dawson shone under the conditions and had a barnstorming run to finish 3rd Australian over the line which, together with his relay run, earned Aidan a well deserved place in the Australian Honours Team.

Capital Performance at Aus Champs

Sunday, 29 September 2013 - Bungendore - 48 Garingal members have been competing in the Australian Championships currently being held in and around Canberra.

Garingal has a great record in the sprint and urban events and this year was no exception.  We had some fantastic results in the Australian Sprint Championships which were held at Canberra Grammar School located at the base of Red Hill.

Cameraygal Festival Orienteering

Lane Cove's 2013 "Moving with the Flow" Cameraygal Event.

For more than five years, Garingal Orienteers have run a Come And Try It orienteering event in conjunction with Lane Cove Council's annual local festival.

In 2013, we returned to our "Blackman Park" map of Lane Cove West, which includes the Lane Cove River shore between Epping Rd and Linley Point.

Garingal Orienteers invited everyone to have a GO Orienteering, finding your way on foot, using this map, around Blackman Park, along the foreshore of the gently flowing Lane Cove River, and out into Lane Cove West, exploring riverside-parks and reserves, on a warm springtime Sydney Sunday morning.

Orienteering is for all ages, male or female, fit or not-so-fit. The courses can be tried as a group or have a GO on your own. Four courses were there to try.  The Very Easy, very short course for the youngest children to go around with a parent, another (the Easy) a bit longer for older children or newer beginners, another of some length for those who are confident finding their way around (Short Moderate), and finally the longest course for experienced bush navigators to tackle (Long Moderate).

Experienced Garingal Orienteers in orange-“ASK ME”-vests explained the sport to new-comers.

The special orienteering map had been prepared for each competitor to use with control sites already marked on the map, with a ‘clue’ sheet having a detailed description of each control feature needed to be found.

Time: Starts were anytime from 9:30 am until 11:30 am. Course closure was 12.30pm (when we packed up to go home)

Garingal Four Decades

Tuesday, 27 August 2013 - Garingal turns 40 years old next week and to celebrate we are getting together at the North Ryde Golf Club for an evening of memorabilia and trivia.  You will be able to check out some historic photographs, share a few yarns from the decades gone by, refresh old acquaintances and compare notes from classic events.

Who was the first Garingal president?  Which other club in Sydney was formed from Garingal members at UNSW?  Who set the course at Ophir which involved a route choice through a mining tunnel and did it comply with the setting rules?  Were the original controls used by Garingal just red buckets?

GO's 40th Birthday Celebration

Garingal Orienteers began around September 1973 as a spin-off of some keen North Shore-based members from the first O-"club" in NSW.

The club has now reached its 40 years anniversary so we've decided to have a celebratory party.

We've booked a room at a local club (North Ryde Golf Club, Twin Rd, North Ryde).  We hope most Garingal members will come along to be part of the celebration.

North Ryde GC has excellent dining facilities so please buy yourselves a pre-party meal there.  We suggest we diners gather from about 6pm so we all can feast together.  The Bistro menu is here, and there is a special menu for party groups here.

At about 7.30pm, we will move to our room and get quizzically trivial in a serious way.  No doubt there will be club memorabilia on display (no, not the oldest members) and perhaps a few videos and blood-spattered black&white maps to reminisce over.  Ah, the good old daze.

As you will see from the opening picture above, we want members to let us know who's coming, and even to send in your favourite trivia questions (and answers) to the hard-working organisers so you can at least score some points during the quiz.

So respond now to either Barbara or Tania, via whatever device you're using!!

RSVP: Friday 31st August

The evening will conclude with some O-training, a short memory course, from the clubhouse to your car somewhere in the car-park.  Maps may be available but not SI.
