2015 News

Gateway to Gardens of Stone now in place.

Graeme and RonBen Bullen - 15 November 2015 -   On Thursday 11th of November, three Garingalites (Graeme Dawson, Ross Morrison and Ron Junghans) travelled to Lot 22 on the edge of our Gardens of Stone map at Ben Bullen to do a little fence work.  Gus the owner of Lot 22 has given us the okay to assemble on his open paddock for Garingal's State League event 22nd May 2016.

As part of the deal for using his land we agreed to relocate his entrance gate and repair the front fence line.  Ron and Ross

This new assembly area allows Ross to design courses that will access the unused eastern part of the map for the shorter courses and provide a whole new experience for the majority of orienteers.  The photos show some of the day's action and the finished product.

Reserve the date:  May 22nd 2016.  Gardens of Stone, Ben Bullen.     Event organiser - Graeme Dawson, Course Planner - Ross Morrison.

Garingal Interclub Champ

Sydney Olympic Park, Saturday, 7 November 2015 - The NSW Orienteering Awards for 2015 were presented at Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday.   Garingal was honoured with NSW Interclub Competition Trophy for 2015, having obtained the most points amongst the clubs during the State League events.  This is the fourth year in a row Garingal has taken out the trophy.  However, the competition was very strong with Garingal winning by only a narrow margin over  Newcastle and Big Foot.

Another highlight from the NSW awards over the weekend was Ross Barr being awarded course setter of the year.  Ross set the national orienteering league event at UNSW earlier in the year.  The course was set on a new map prepared by Carol Jacobson and the event was a sensation.  Congratulations to Ross for the course setting award and we also congratulate Carol for producing a wonderful map.

Garingal also took out Division 1 in the MetrOleague for the first time in many years, overcoming the incumbent Big Foot team.  The Division 1 team comprised Aidan Dawson, Michele Dawson, Toby Wilson, Istvan Kertez, Peter Annetts, Steve Ryan and up and coming junior Duncan Currie.  Duncan was awarded the NSW Junior of the Year for his contribution to orienteering during 2015.

Finally, we should make mention of our junior elite runners, Aidan Dawson, Toby Wilson and Daniel Hill who finished 1-2-3 in the orienteer of the year awards in the M17-20 division.

Sportident Air+ demonstration

For those with an interest in Sportident setup going to Ballarat.  Invitation from Colin Price of AussieOgear:

Sportident would like to give you some information about Air + , the SIAC personal sticks and how it works with traditional orienteering equipment.    Not a big talk but a demonstration, and to answer any questions.

There will be a meeting at the Eastwood Leisure Complex ,  Sunday 27th at 4.30 pm (after the Australian Middle Distance event). Eastwood Street near Coles.   map

There will be a  demonstration  of the Air + system and how it interacts with current Sportident hardware.      Chris Naunton has been using the Air + system and SIAC sticks for several months at MTB Enduro Events  so has valuable knowledge on how it works.

Orienteers may also be able to look at and try the Air + units which we hope to have set up at the Australian Middle Distance event and also at the Australian Sprint event.   This will be based around the AussieOgear shop which is the Australian Distributor of Sportident.

It Blinks and Beeps  Finally an SI Stick with decent sound.
