Garingal Junior In Australian Schools Team

Michele is Garingal's first Australian junior rep for as long as we can remember!  Michele won the Australian Sprint and Long Championships in the under 14 womens category over the last 2 days and performed strongly in the Australian schools championships earlier in the week.

There have been some other great results during the week.  The Australian middle and Queensland long distance championships were held last Sunday.  There were good runs posted by club members Jim Merchant, Ross Barr, Ron Junghans, James Lithgow, John Anderson, Barbara Junghans, Daniel Hill, Huon Wilson, Chris Yuan and Matthew Hill on these days in very hot conditions.  The terrain was generally spur gully with no rocks, tracks or fences and was an extra challenge to Sydneysiders used to MetrOLeague and park O.  The visibility was generally open but there was some very thick vegetation in the creek lines which happened to be where the setter had decided to put controls.

The Australian Sprint Championships were held on Friday at the Maryborough Showground.  Garingal had an outstanding day on the podium with 4 of its members becoming Australian champions in one afternoon!  Michele Dawson (W14), Barbara Hill (W40), Ron Junghans (M65) (pictured above) and Neil Schafer (M80) all won their respective divisions.

It was a different story on Saturday however as the carnival moved into the deep bush for the Australian Long Championships.  There were plenty of long times and mps for the day and Garingal was unable to match the euphoria of the previous day.  Michele and Neil were able to wave the Garingal flag by again winning their divisions but the rest of the team was unable to follow suit.  Even the three amigos, who have had outstanding results all week, were joining the club president at the lower end of the tally board!

The carnival concluded on Sunday with the relay events.
