The bush season finally commenced for 2010 with State League 1 and 2 on the weekend of 13/14 March at Clandulla State Forest. Clandulla is between Lithgow and Rylstone. The running terrain was a combination of fast open forest with a good dose of intricate rock and gully systems to balance the playing field for the navigators. Day 1 was on the map known as "Prossers Reef". The first half of the courses skirted the top of the deep gullies to the west and was quite slow going amongst the thickish vegetation. The second half of the course was made for the runners with vast tracks of flat open forest with few obstacles. The times were generally fast. Jamie Kennedy debuted in the state league with a win in M45AS. The Wilson family scored a hat-trick with Aidre Long topping W45AS, Toby Wilson winning the M14A and Huon Wilson finishing in the lead in the M18A. Day 2 was on the adjacent map known as "Carwells Labyrinth". This is a cracker of a map with a winding creek system at the bottom of deep valley system defined by endless rock faces. The absence of blue north lines on the maps confused the unwary at the start. The courses made full use of the valley with a series of contol sites requiring navigating into and across the valley, creek and ridges. The times were generally long and there were a few mispunches in the juniors as the terrain was navigationally challenging. Aidan Dawson starred in the M14A and Michele Dawson had a close finish to win the W16A. Full results, splits and a further report of the event can be found here.
