Waverton, Wednesday 23 June 2010: 34 starters braved the cold and wet conditions from Waverton Park on Wednesday evening. Several others arrived but decided that warmth and dryness were preferable to pencils and pots, and so left without competing. The course setter attempted to challenge any "get the lot" types with what he thought was a fairly wide spread in the hilly harbourside terrain, but WHO's Andy Hill proved well up to the task, returning with a full card in under 42 minutes. Full results can be found here.
Even though he had the benefit of the last of the daylight as he ran, it was still raining more or less constantly and far from optimum conditions. Most formidable.
WHO's only other runner, Adrian White, completed a one-two double by coming in second with 550 points. Wendy Stevenson (BigFoot) and Michael Free (GO) tied for third with 540. Daniel Dohle (GO, 530), Peter Annetts (GO, 510) and Lisa Grant (GO, 510) were the others to crack 500. Ross Barr (GO, 450) was the strongest of the seniors division. The only junior competitor, Duncan Currie, delivered an impressive 370, and an even more impressive trip over a guy rope two meters from the finish. Fortunately no damage done to Duncan (or the rope). Another remarkable achievement was David Bowerman, whose watch failed two minutes into his run, but still returned only 19 seconds over the 45 minute mark.
My thanks to all who took on the course and the weather, including 19 GO members. Also thanks to those who assisted before, during or after the event. In particular, appreciation is due to organiser Jamie Kennedy (who filed this report except for this sentence) and Andy Graham who vetted the course. |
