Leichhardt - Sunday, 5 September 2010: Windy conditions greeted the juniors lining up for the 7th race in the junior league series over the weekend. The Callan Park race is a favourite on the junior circuit with the picturesque location, open parklands and complex building formations.
There was so much wind that there were one or two dropped maps which were quickly wisked away beyond sight. That said, most of the juniors completed the course in competitive times just in time to get back for Fathers Day lunch!
Next weekend is the NSW State Championships near Lithgow. The Middle Distance race is on Saturday and the long distance race is on Sunday. The start list and event information are now up on the event website. There is some very important safety information the Sunday event which you should read before running. You can still enter on the day on some of the courses. Club running training is on this Wednesday at 6:30pm at the warm up track at Olympic Park, Homebush. All Garingal members are welcome to attend the training session. |

Southern Highlands, 29 August 2010 - The NSW Schools Champs were held last weekend in the heart of the southern highlands. The champs were part of the latest round of the State League.
The assembly and finish area was nestled in amongst the "power pole plantation" and was a great scene for the presentations of the schools awards. The map was known as "the piggery" which provided a mixture of pine forest and native eucalypt in the gullies. The map challenged the best of the orienteers. Full results from the event can be found here. The weekend also had a "warm up" event on the Saturday which was a pairs challenge in another part of the forest. This was a 2 person relay. The Central Coast club set some impressive short courses which were enjoyed by the teams, particularly as the runners had to come back through the "spectator" area on many occasions. The highlight of the event was the club president setting off on the orange course with the red map which caused some confusion and a red face. Many of the Garingal club members utilised the association "hut" in the forest. The next country event is the NSW Champs is a double header on 11 and 12 September. This willl be held in the Lithgow area. You can enter on the day for some classes. Details can be found through the event website. Running training will be held at 6:30pm at the Homebush althletics warm up track this Wednesday. All Garingal members are welcome to attend the training. |

Orienteering NSW is organising a level 1 coaching course for orienteering on Saturday 16 October and Sunday 17 October 2010. The course will be held at the Belanglo hut and surrounds.
The course is designed for any orienteer wanting to become an accredited level 1 orienteering coach (or re-accredited). But the course is also designed for anyone wanting to improve their knowledge of and performance in orienteering. The course is highly recommended for club members, particularly those wanting training in a bush environment, even if you can only attend for a day. The course is being run by the highly credentialled Nick Dent. Nick is the NSW Coaching Director, the NSW Schools Team Coach and was key organiser of the Junior World Champs in Dubbo in 2007 and the World Masters in Sydney last year. Nick has recently been appointed as the co-ordinator of the 2011 Oceania Champs Carnival. This is a great opportunity to get some top draw orienteering coaching, improve your skills in the sport and also obtain level 1 coaching accreditation. You should contact Nick Dent on 0428251786 to book your place. Further details of the training can be found here. |

Terry Hills, 7 August 2010 - Saturday morning 7th August dawned to clear, crisp, sunny skies - a pleasant relief after a gloomy cloudy wet July. That day we had the best roll up to any of our working bees ever, with 18 Garingalites helping in one way or another.
Larry Weiss as organiser for the State Champs in a month's time was able to check that all the gear he needed was there and in good repair. Also, we were able to get the pots ready for the Summer Series. The shed got a major clean-up (luckily Council clean up is this week too).
Amazing what having a bbq does to attract people. After 3 hrs of work, we sat down to relax in the beautiful sunshine and put meat on the bbq.
Many thanks to all who participated (for who they are, see the photos). Ron Junghans |
