Willoughby Spring Festival 2013

Garingal Orienteers are pleased to announce we are again putting on a "Come And Try It" beginners-welcome orienteering event as part of Willoughby City's 2013 Spring Festival held annually throughout September.

The event is on Sunday, 15th September, with starts anytime between 9.30 and 11.30am.

We are further pleased that this year, Willoughby Leisure Centre is assisting us in this event and has offered all orienteering-triers free access for the day to the many facilities at the Leisure Centre - this normally costs $22 so we thank the Leisure Centre for this offer.  Note, the Centre’s facilities include a sauna, spa, indoor heated swimming pool, cafe, showers, change rooms etc.

Our Start/Finish for the orienteering courses is located at the rear of the Centre building after passing through the Leisure Centre in Small St, Willoughby.  Look for O-signs to guide you.  There's a good car park by the Centre for those coming by car.  For those with very young children, there is an excellent playground with bicycle track by the Griffin-designed art-nouveau "Incinerator" now an arts centre, also in Small Street.

Our event is also the Final of the Sydney Junior League, a competition for junior orienteers that runs over some 10 events in 2013. An awards ceremony to our Juniors is likely at the end of the event.

For newcomers to orienteering, there will be a short training-explaining session from club member Jim Merchant around 9.30am, so please come early and get good advice on what to do. No charge for this, just turn up and listen.  Then you can try a course by yourselves.

There are four courses available to try.  A short, about 2km long very easy course for young children that will go around the parklands by the Leisure Centre.  A slightly more adventurous course for older kids and an intermediate course are suited to the more confident.  For the very fit and experienced navigators, the Long course will be about 10km long and take you anywhere between Artarmon and Cammeray along the Tunks Creek valley.

Entry fees for any orienteering course are:  Adults $10,  Juniors(13-20yrs) $7, Sub-juniors (<13yrs) $5, with a Family maximum $30.  You will need to hire an SI (SportIdent) computer memory stick to carry with you and record your time around the course.

Experienced Garingal Orienteers in distinctive orange "ASK ME" vests will be on hand to answer any questions before or after you've tried a course.
