Back to Granite

Sunday, 9 September 2012 - Gumble - last weekend saw a return to the granite country in the central west for the NSW State Championships.  Both days involved running on some of the best orienteering maps around with a bamboozling mass of granite boulders dominating the terrain.  The Sunday area in the Gumble forest was particularly challenging with a large area of undulating land populated with different shaped rocks and vegetation with a vibrant hue.

Poles Apart at the Piggery

The NSBH team after the raceSunday 26 August 2012 - Belanglo - well here we are...garingal.com.au is back on line after a few weeks break due to a website update.  We kick off with the news this week that the North Sydney Boys High School orienteering team took out the NSW Schools Championships at the Piggery on the weekend.  This was the first time that the NSBH team has won the title and a proud moment for Garingal as most of the team are members of the club.  Some of the team have been competing in the Junior League for a number of years and for others it was their first event.  Well done to the boys.  A new title was added this year for the champion region.  The Combined Independent Schools team took out this title and we congratulate Aidan and Michele Dawson who were members of the winning regional team.

The races were held on a map known as "The Piggery" which is located at Belanglo State Forest.  This was the second day of a weekend State League double header in the forest.  Day 1 was held about 6km away in the southern end of the forest on a map that was so old it seemed new.  There were some long times on the day 1 course with some downed timber on the ground and a challenging map. Both days were entertaining orienteering in a quality forest.  State League 10 - Results - Splits - NSW Schools Champs (State League 11) - Results - Splits

Moonlight Madness 6 -  Wednesday 29 August 2012 at Brennan Park at King Street Waverton.  GO's Wendy Stevenson set a night score course of 30 controls around Balls Head & Berry Island, particularly challenging for the elites but with a good selection of control options for the recreational orienteers to exercise body and mind over 45 minutes or so.  Results and the map can be viewed here.

Next and final MM for 2012 is to be around Putney under the September Full Moon - click the moon wearing the headlamp for details.

9 Lives at Oatley

James Lithgow in action at the Australian 3 DaysSunday, 27 May 2012 - Oatley:  Garingal fielded a record 9 teams in the MetrOleague last Sunday at Oatley.  Club Captain, Jamie Kennedy, rustled up the teams with runners to spare.  A summary of Jamie's report is below.

In Division A, it was a local derby with the two Garingal teams, the Goannas and the Frill Necks being drawn against each other.  Glenn Horrocks bagged the 10 points and the Goannas took the race 33-22.

In Division B, the Garingal Monitors were narrowly defeated by Bennelong for their first loss of the season and the Molochs were also just shaded by Big Foot.  Daniel Hill, Tom Joss and Toby Wilson stood out with 10, 9 and 9 points respectively.  Remarkably, the Garingal Dragons scored a tie against the Uringa Central Coast Harriers for the second time in consecutive events.  Lisa Grant scored 9 points and Jamie Kennedy nabbed 7.

In Division C, the Garingal Geckos were drawn against the Garingal Skinks.  The Geckos won the race 28-27 with Claire Winnick scoring the 10 points maximum.

The ironically named Garingal Legless team had a very convincing 36-18 win over SHOO in Division D with Alex Kennedy first home with 10 points and Nick Wyche not far behind contributing 9 points.   Finally, in Division E the Blue Tongues were no match for the Uringa-Central Coast Kestrels going down 19-36.

All in all, a classic day orienteering in the Autumn sunshine.  Thank you to the Kennedy family for organising the Garingal teams and the club for a record breaking turnout.

Moonlight Madness This Wednesday - The next event is David Stitt's "Moonlight Madness" adventure in Chatswood this Wednesday evening.  The event is on a new map of central and east Chatswood.  Starts are between 5:30pm and 7pm.  Please meet at Bales Park, Sydney Street, Chatswood.  Further details can be found here.

Garingal Website Upgrade

Monday, 6 August 2012 - Sydney - We are currently in the process of upgrading our website.  The first stage of the upgrade involves updating the "back-end" infrastructure for the site.   The site has now been transferred to the new infrastructure, but we have to update the last 2 weeks of data to bring the site back up to date.  This will occur over the next few days so please be patient as we update the site.  The second stage will involve updating the "front end" which will be the visible parts of the site.

On the Right Track

Michele Dawson crosses the line at the Coalfields ClassicSunday, 13 May 2012 - Newcastle - Michele Dawson's preparations for representing Australia at the Junior World Orienteering Champs are well on track following an outstanding weekend at the "Coalfields Classic".  Last weekend was a national orienteering league event near Newcastle and Michele wrapped up the races with two second placings in the bush events.  Michele is the Garingal club's first ever Australian junior representative and will be heading to Slovakia in July to compete against the world's best orienteering juniors.  Congratulations Michele on your Australian team selection and the weekend results.

Coalfields Classic - quite a few Garingal members also headed up the F3 for the weekend.  They were rewarded with a quality sprint event set amongst the beautiful bush surroundings of Newcastle University and at Pelaw Main Colliery the most spectacular finish area in recent orienteering history.  The finish area was an historic parkland featuring an old railway station and coal skips from a long time ago.  The train line was closed for the day (hence the picture).  Spectators could sit on the station platform tracking the progress of the orienteers steaming into the finish chute.   The NSW Wildfires, which is the under 12 junior group, also were in full flight with their new blue shirts and snappy new modern tent and banner.  There were some spectacularly good Garingal results.  These included, but are not limited to, Ross Barr with a 1.1.2, James Lithgow with a 2.1.1 (a dead heat for first on day 2), Daniel Hill with a 1.1.1, Duncan Currie with a 1.1.1, Alex Kennedy with a 1.2.2 and new recruit Bruce Beder with a 1.2.3.  Full results from the weekend can be found here.  Photos can be found here.

Next Garingal Event -Garingal will be holding a club event this Sunday, 20 May 2012 at Artarmon.  The event will also double as the junior league so we are expecting a large turnout of families for the race.  The meeting area for the event is Artarmon Reserve at east end of Burra Road, Artarmon (see map ) with starts between 9:30am and 11:30am.  The organiser for the event is Colin Currie who can be contacted on 0419 980 962 if you require any specific information.
